Members of the Neurogenetics of Locomotion Lab won the People's Choice award in the NeuroArt Image Contest

Anna Hobbiss and Alexandra Medeiros, both members of the Neurogenetics of Locomotion Lab led by César Mendes at CEDOC - Centro de Estudos de Doenças Crónicas | NOVA Medical School - Faculdade de Ciências Médicas, have won the People's Choice award in the monthly NeuroArt Image Contest - July edition.

The winning photo shows the confocal image of a leg of a Drosophila Melanogaster - also known as the fruit fly, is one of the most used model organisms used in biological research that has made significant contributions to the biggestscientific community over the last century. Here we can see the sensory neurons at the base of the Mechanosensory Bristles (hairs covering the leg) which are expressing GFP (green). These neurons are activated when the bristle is deflected, allowing the fly to sense external forces such as wind or contact with objects. The autofluorescence of the leg cuticle is shown in red.

CEDOC wishes the best to the researchers for their future projects!
