CEDOC-NOVA Medical School is part of 2 new Associated Laboratories that were granted funding from Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). The success of both applications certifies the excellence of the research work developed at CEDOC and reinforces the positioning of the Research Centre at national level in the area of Chronic Diseases, Precision Medicine and Global Health.
The new Associated Laboratories are LS4FUTURE - Life Sciences for a Healthy and Sustainable Future and REAL - Translation and Innovation for Global Health.
LS4FUTURE, Life Sciences for a Healthy and Sustainable Future, hosted by Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier (ITQB NOVA) brings together 4 other institutions, CEDOC-NMS, Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica (iBET), Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) and Instituto Português de Oncologia de Lisboa Francisco Gentil (IPOLFG), throught the participation of three R&D Units: iNOVA4Health, MOSTMICRO and GREEN-IT.
LS4FUTURE will dedicate its research mainly in the areas of Biotechnology, Health and Environment, divided in four thematic lines: From Molecules to ecosystems; Mechanisms of disease for precision Medicine; Advanced Therapeutics:discovery and development and Biotechnology for a sustainable world.
This consortium achieved the maximum rating granted in this evaluation -100, with a recommended annual financing of 1.7 M€, for a period of ten years.
The Associate Laboratory for Translation and Innovation towards Global Health (REAL) is led by NOVA Medical School, which partners with four institutions, Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública (ENSP NOVA), University of Evora, University of Coimbra and University of Lisbon. REAL brings together three R&D Units: Comprehensive Health Research Centre, GHMT, and LIBPhys.
REAL is a multidisciplinary and comprehensive consortium, that aims at advance translation science and global health. REAL is committed to stimulate research of excellency and new discoveries, such as vaccines, health literacy tools, biomarkers and novel treatments, and successfully identify opportunities for technology transfer aligned with societal challenges and public policies.
This new Associated Laboratory achived an exeptional rating of 80, with a recommended annual financing of 135 K€ for a period of 5 years, renewable for a subsequent equal period of time.
The Associated Laboratories qualified by the FCT represent structural components of the National Scientific and Technological System, consisting of research and development institutions or consortia of R&D institutions that make explicit institutional commitments for the pursuit of national scientific and technological policy objectives. Moreover, these laboratories must have a dimension of human resources and scientific infrastructure that allows them to promote scientific and technical careers for doctorates, in a sustained way.
The evaluation of the 40 qualified applications, submitted in 2020, was conducted by a national panel, who also had the collaboration of an international scientific council.
