Portuguese Olympic Committee awards first prize in Sports Medicine to João Beckert

João Beckert, from Integrated Pathophysiological Mechanisms Lab, won the First Prize in the 2016 Contest for Sport Sciences, on the Sports Medicine category, awarded by the Portuguese Olympic Committee.

The award was attributed to his work “Alteration of the physiological response due to the effect of simulated altitude”, developed by his team at Jamor’s High Performance Center (CAR Jamor) in collaboration with researchers from CEDOC – NMS|FCM, namely group leader Nuno Neuparth, CIPER (Faculdade de Motricidade Humana) and CENTEC (Instituto Superior Técnico).

This work highlighted the fact that metabolism during exercise is not only determined by its intensity, but also by the oxygen availability. These findings will bring benefit to athletes’ training, especially the ones who use the simulated altitude training room at CAR Jamor.
