Today we observe World Pneunomia Day, along with the Stop Pneumonia Organization. We speak with Doctor Pedro Póvoa, pneumologist at Hospital São Francisco de Xavier, about this day.
Pneumonia is the single biggest infectious killer of adults and children – claiming the lives of 2.5 million, including 672,000 children, in 2019. Deaths from COVID-19 will add two million more in 2020, bringing the total to more than 4 million. No other infection causes anywhere near this burden of death.
Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is also a great burden inside all infections with pneumonia and that is why we talked with Pedro Póvoa, pneumologist at Hospital São Francisco de Xavier and clinical researcher at CEDOC-NMS at the Integrated Pathophysiological Mechanisms group, lead by Nuno Neuparth.
