What does a Marie Curie fellowship mean in the life of a scientist? We spoke with Nuno Mendonça and Rita Teodoro at the celebration of the Polish scientist's birthday

One of the most famous scientists in the world, Marie Curie, was born Maria Salomea Skłodowska on November 7, 1867 in Warsaw, Poland. Nationalized French, she was a pioneer in radioactivity studies, which earned her two Nobel Prizes. She was the first woman to win one, remains the only woman to win two and is the only person with two Nobel Prizes in scientific fields, Physics and Chemistry.

Today her name not only carries the weight of a legacy but also symbolizes the legacy of thousands of other scientists whose freedom of research was allowed thanks to the award of Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), one of the most prestigious individual grants at European level and which allows scientists to advance their academic career with their own line of research.

We spoke with two former holders of these MSCAs: Nuno Mendonça, epidemiologist at the EpiDoc unit CEDOC-NMS, and Rita Teodoro, principal investigator at the Neuronal Growth and Plasticity laboratory at CEDOC-NMS, about how they went to win the scholarship and how it was done. allowed them to define their place in the international research landscape.
